Cagliari City tour (3 max 4 hours – panoramic tour by bus and walking tour)

Join us on this fascinating half day tour of Cagliari, the Capital of Sardinia and discover the many places of interest with a native tour guide. The tour begins with an orientation drive towards the east side of the City. Drive along the busy modern waterfront of Cagliari Via Roma with beautiful 19th century palaces and proceed to the Basilica of Our lady of Bonaria, which still preserves a wooden image of the Virgin washed ashore after a shipwreck in 1370. A photo stop will be made on the top of Mount Urpinu to enjoy views of the old city dominated by the Cathedral, the Protected Area of Molentargius lagoon where flamingos and other birds nest, and a view of the Poetto beach. Continue driving through the modern part of the city to arrive at Viale Buoncammino, a panoramic boulevard from where we start the walking tour in to the ancient Medieval quarter “Castello”. From Viale Buoncammino we can get a glimpse of the Roman Amphitheatre. This guided walking tour shows the highlights of this medieval quarter founded by the Pisans from Tuscany in the 12th century, and later occupied by the Aragonese, Spanish and the Savoys. We will pass by the ancient fortifications, 14th century towers and many interesting buildings such as the Viceroyal Palace and the ancient Town Hall. In Piazza Palazzo we will visit the interior of the Cathedral of Santa Maria (parish church of Santa Cecilia) which features a mixture of styles from Romanesque to Baroque. We will also see the fine baroque style of the underground crypt. Proceed to the Terrace Umberto I and the Bastion Saint Remy to admire another panorama of the city. On request: We can also enjoy the National Archaeological Museum to admire the fascinating finds of Sardinia Nuraghic Civilizations and Punic and Roman finds.

On request it is also possible to visit the indoor Fruit and vegetable market “Mercato di San Benedetto “ where all the Sardinian colourful fruit, a wide range of sheep “Pecorino” cheese, fish and vegetable are nicely displayed in the many stalls. Please note the market only opens from 8am to 1pm and it is closed on Sunday.
